New Bar and Restaurant Openings in Sydney 2019
Sydney’s bustling restaurant and bar scene is constantly evolving, with new venues popping up each month. 2019 was a great year for the city, with the arrival of exciting new eateries, the re-opening of revamped old favourites and award winning cocktail bars joining the scene.
Australia’s famous beach suburb Bondi has had a wave of new restaurant openings. You’ll find Eden, a plant based restaurant serving food, wine and cocktails and two new Italians, CicciaBella and Totti’s, set in a olive tree lined courtyard.
Further down the coast, Osteria Coogee opened its doors in May, offering delicious seafood, house made pasta and Italian and Australian wines. Another beachside Italian Busta appeared in Manly from the team behind Sunset Sabi and Chica Bonita.
In the CBD, underground steak house The Gidley opened in November, a short stroll away from two new Italians; Ragazzi Wine and Pasta and Toppi Martin Place. The latter offering handmade pasta, Venetian bar snacks and barrel-aged negronis.
Newtown icon Mary’s deviated from their classic burgers, with the arrival of Mary’s Underground, a jazz bar and restaurant serving seafood, dry aged duck and natural wines. Nearby, sustainable seafood restaurant The Catch launched before Christmas with Michelin star chef Damien Brassel at the helm.
Potts Point welcomed Franca, a contemporary brasserie serving French and European cuisine, as well as Sonora, a restaurant and mezcal bar inspired by the coastal state of the same name, in Mexico’s north-west.
Japanese-Peruvian bar and restaurant Nikkei joined Surry Hills eclectic restaurant scene, and in Enmore Colombo Social is an exciting new social enterprise Sri Lankan eatery, supporting Sri Lankan asylum seekers and refugees.
The team behind the Grounds at Alexandria have created Lobby Boy in North Sydney, offering coffee and relaxed contemporary dining. Egg of the Universe, the yoga studio and wholefoods café has opened a second branch in South Eveleigh.
You can enjoy classic Greek pastries at Alevri in Dulwich Hill, or bread baked in a wood fired oven at Cherry Moon General Store in Annandale. In the CBD on Kent Street is newly opened multi-restaurant concept, Kuro, serving innovative Japanese cuisine, cocktails matcha and coffee.
Another Japanese styled café Kurumac opened in Marrickville, offering Japanese comfort food alongside Campos coffee, and in Ultimo, St Aubaine is a new tropical rainforest themed café, complete with hanging plants and floral walls.
It has been a thrilling year for new bars in the city, with Maybe Sammy’s named as the best bar in Australasia in the annual World’s 50 Best Bars List for 2019. Another exciting new destination for cocktails is Saga, a jungle themed bar in Chippendale.
Beer fans can enjoy Beerhaus Barrangaroo, with over 40 varieties on tap, or German inspired beers, schnapps and pretzels at Cuckoo, upstairs at the Marly in Newtown. Keg & Brew Hotel, the historic Surry Hills inn reopened in October after a $10 million revamp.
Coogee’s first wine bar opened its doors last winter, with an extensive wine list from around the world, alongside charcuterie, cheese and small plates and Darlinghurst saw the opening of Stanley’s – a Miami Vice inspired bar with tropical cocktails.
