Cameron Mackintosh’s bold new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece will make its debut at the Sydney Opera House in 2022. Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star.
This new production is reimagined with new choreography, scenic design and staging, including many special effects from the famous chandelier to the underground lake. It will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 65.
Hit after hit punctuates the thrilling score, from the stunning romance of Music of the Night, Think of Me and All I Ask of You to the splendid Masquerade and the brilliant title song. Now, Sydney will hear them all in a spectacular production that has stunned critics across the United Kingdom and North America.
Australian musical theatre performer Josh Piterman will star as the Phantom. Josh performed the role on London’s West End in 2019, and his other credits include West Side Story, Cats, Hairspray and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. The rest of the Australian cast will be announced soon.
