Mardi Gras Sydney

10 May 2012

Anytime of year is a good time to schedule an Australian road trip, but if you’re one that enjoys big crowds and the excitement of large events, then one event you won’t want to miss is the annual Sydney Mardi Gras.

Sydney’s Mardi Gras festivities are world renowned for their flamboyant and hilariously outrageous parties, costumes, and other activities that the city’s communities participate in. Sydney has long embraced its LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) populations, and attracts visitors from all around the country and overseas.

Our Mardi Gras experience started on Friday with a trip to Bondi Beach to take in the Bondi Drag races. Sydney’s drag kings and queens emerged from the nightclubs to compete in the sun and sand of world famous Bondi Beach at the hilarious Drag Races, which were hosted by Vanessa Wagner of Sydney.

The highlight for our group was getting to be a part of the parade on Saturday and walk down Flinders Street in Sydney.  Later that night we went the Mardi Gras party where Kylie Minogue was performing.

The two week event includes drag races, film festivals, parties, and a culmination of the revelry with the Mardi Gras parade. It’s certainly an occasion not to be missed! If you’re visiting Sydney over the Mardi Gras celebrations, get involved in the annual shenanigans for a good time.

Other major events that you may want to plan your trip around include Australian Open of Surf (February), Vivid (May/June), and New Year’s Eve. If you know you’re going to be in Sydney during one of these events, make sure that you lock down accommodation in Sydney months ahead of time.
