Soak up the Christmas spirit in Sydney with these beautiful light displays in the heart of the city. From twinkling fairy lights to animated projections, there are plenty of opportunities to revel in the magic of Christmas this December.

Starting with a mesmerizing lighting ceremony on 25 November, a huge, interactive Christmas tree will illuminate Martin Place every day until the new year. Join in as Christmas carolers add to the festivities between 6 and 8pm each night, and stay to enjoy the Christmas-themed light projections decorating the floor of Martin Place from dusk until 1am. Well-wishers can also submit a personal message to be broadcast on the tree’s LED ribbon for all to see.

When: 25 November – 24 December (live Christmas carols), 25 November – 1 January (Christmas tree and light projections).

Once again, St Mary’s Cathedral will be pulling out all the stops with its annual Lights of Christmas show. This captivating show sees beautiful animations projected onto the 75-metre-high facade of St Mary’s Cathedral. Accompanied by a custom soundtrack, this enchanting light and sound show has become Sydney’s most popular public Christmas display. Lights of Christmas will start with a choir performance at 7.30pm each night and last until midnight. There will also be a selection of food and drink on offer, including artisan gelato and Christmas-inspired churros.

When: 6–25 December (including Christmas night).

Customs House, Circular Quay

Going out to dinner or shopping around Circular Quay? Make sure you stop by Customs House to watch the animated light projections taking over the square in the lead-up to Christmas. This family-friendly light show will be projected onto the floor outside historic Customs House every night from 8:30pm to 1am.

Enjoy Christmas shopping with a difference by visiting Pitt Street Mall this December. From 25 November until Christmas Night, Pitt Street Mall will be transformed into a Boulevard of Light by around 80,000 golden fairy lights. Walk beneath the twinkling canopy of lights and take a quiet moment as Christmas carols are performed from 6–8pm every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday night until 21 December. With such a magical atmosphere in one of Sydney’s leading shopping areas, late night Christmas shopping just got a whole lot merrier.
