The Winter Solstice occurs during December in the Northern Hemisphere and June in the Southern Hemisphere. This year in Sydney, the annual Winter event will occur on the 22nd of June. There are many fun filled activities and events to attend on the shortest day and longest night of the year. Here are some Winter Solstice events around Sydney:
MCA Light Show
Marvel at the MCA Light Show (April 16th – July 5th) featuring artwork ranging from the 1960’s to present day. The major art exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, displays creative pieces done by 17 international artists and their use of light as a sculptural art medium. The Light Show is an interactive display playing on the spatial and sensory impact of light in different forms. The Light Show is open every night to the public.
Catch Cameron Mackintosh’s theatre production, Les Misérables at the Capitol Theatre. Set in the 19th revolutionary French era, Les Misérables is an international award-winning musical based on the classic novel created by Victor Hugo. The theatre production is available from March 19th and will conclude September the 15th.
Winter Magic Festival
Leading up to the day, Katoomba welcomes the Winter Solstice by hosting the Winter Magic Festival on the 20th of June. The Winter Magic Festival is an annual community event where the main streets are closed off and turned into a performance space. Visitors can experience a variety of street stalls, music, live entertainment and a wide range of activities. The theme this year is PEACE and was chosen to celebrate Katoomba’s culturally diverse community..
Winter in Bondi is a magical place, thriving with restaurants, cafes, bars, markets and a full calendar of events and activities. An ice rink is open this year in front of the Bondi Pavilion, featuring a huge outdoor ice rink, fantastic ice shows from the Stars On Ice, along with the IcePALS penguins who will be helping the little ones learn to skate. Sessions run from 10am- 9pm, with the last session starting at 8pm daily.
Winter Solstice Run
Start the day bright and early with the Winter Solstice Run hosted by Mazda MX-5 Breakfast Club. The drive is approximately 170km and will head towards the south. The scenic run starts at Heathcote and ends at Kiama. There will be a few pit stops along the way including the Robertson Pie Shop, Wilton and the Saddleback Mountain lookout.
Yoga at Yoga Well
Celebrate the Winter Solstice and awaken your body with a yoga session at the Yoga Well. The session begins by practicing 108 Sun Salutations as the sun sets starting with gentle moves and progressing onto more dynamic variation. The session concludes with yoga nidra (guided relaxation) and restorative yoga.
