Winter is just around the corner! Get out of the house with these exciting winter events taking place in Sydney this season!
1. Vivid Sydney May 23 – June 9
Sydney will sparkle, shimmer and shine as the sails of the Sydney Opera House are splashed with colour and the Harbour foreshore comes alive with 3D-mapped projections for the sixth year of the winter festival of light, music and ideas, Vivid Sydney. Explore the Vivid Light Walk with more than 50 new light installations, be inspired by the Vivid Ideas program of talks and workshops, and unwind with the line-up of phenomenal artists performing for Vivid Music.
2. Strictly Ballroom the Musical season ends 1 June
The much-loved Australian film that inspired the world to dance has now come to life on stage. It features the original creative team behind the 1992 film including director and co-writer Baz Luhrmann, set and costume designer Catherine Martin, choreographer John O’Connell, and co-writer Craig Pearce. As well as all the hits from the film such as ‘Love is in the Air’, ‘Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps’, and ‘Time after Time’, there are plenty of new tunes to keep you tapping your feet. Sashay your way to the Lyric Theatre for a great night out!
3. Sydney Film Festival 4-15 June
One of the world’s longest-running film festivals is back, with a 12-day program showing the best feature films, documentaries, short films and animation. Now in its 61st year, the festival returns with a packed program of exclusive talks with filmmakers and other industry experts.
4. Holden State of Origin II NSW v Qld 19 June
The pinnacle of Australian Rugby League and the longest-running rivalry between the NSW Blues and the QLD Maroons is tipped to be one of the best series yet. Will the home ground advantage give the Blues the edge? Be there to see all the action!
5. 2014 Australian Badminton Open 24-29 June
Badminton’s best of the best congregate in Sydney at the 2014 Australian Badminton Open at Sydney Olympic Park. Champions from around the globe will challenge the Australian National Squad and play for prize money totalling US$120,000.
6. The Archibald Prize 19 July – 28 September
The Archibald Prize is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious art awards, dating from 1921. Awarded to the best portrait painting, the Archibald Prize depicts a who’s who of Australian culture – from politicians to celebrities, sporting heroes to artists – and is held at the Art Gallery of NSW.
7. A-League All Stars v Juventus 10 August
Juventus FC, the most successful club in Italy’s history with a world-wide fan base of 250 million, will bring a full strength team to Sydney to face the pick of the Hyundai A-League at ANZ Stadium. The FOXTEL A-League All Stars players and coaching staff will be selected entirely by football fans via an online voting system.
8. The Sun-Herald City2Surf 10 August
The Sun-Herald City2Surf on 10 August is Australia’s epic annual fun run – and the world’s largest with a 14km course, 85,000 participants and new heroes made every year on the journey from the CBD to Bondi Beach.
9. Bledisloe Cup Festival 11-16 August
The 2014 Bledisloe Cup Festival offers fans the opportunity to celebrate one of the greatest rivalries in world sport, the Qantas Wallabies versus the New Zealand All Blacks. The Festival will culminate with the Bledisloe Cup test match at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 16 August.
10. V8 Supercars Sydney Motorsport Park 400 22-24 August
With a jam packed schedule of V8 Supercars action, first class facilities, plus a host of entertainment, the V8 Supercars Sydney Motorsport Park 400 will be a weekend to remember. Catch world class racing action, with two 100 kilometre races on Saturday and a 200 kilometre race on Sunday.
