If you are wandering around The Rocks or Circular Quay in Sydney and wondering why everybody looks so beautiful (well yes Sydney people are gorgeous) but this week all the beautiful people are in town for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
This five-day event showcases the best Australian and Asia-Pacific fashion designers to the fashion industry. Held at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, with the backdrop of stunning Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is all about upcoming and established designers showcasing their wares to a global fashion influencer audience.
A platform to showcase designers’ upcoming spring/summer collections, fashion week attracts international attention from media, bloggers and global fashion buyers and has been the launch pad for many Australian fashion icons including Lisa Ho, Zimmermann, Alex Perry and Collette Dinnigan.
I had the pleasure of attending day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia including Gail Sorronda’s show ‘Oh My Goth!’. Her show featured colourful high waisted pant pieces and almost clown like polka dot dresses. The backdrop was a stunning film made by emerging Australian film maker Nick Waterman which added a deep moodiness to the showcase.
Next on the list was a catwalk style show titled ‘fractured appearance’ by designer Gary Bigeni. His spring/summer collection featured lots of electric blue and tan along with orange elements and bands of black leather and clever mixes of florals and prints.
Other designers on show this week include ksubi, Alice McCall, Jenny Kee, Sarah & Sebastian, Zimmermann, Camilla and many others.
You can’t help but be caught up in the fashion buzz, and making time to people watch the many ‘OTT’ outfits, not just on the models, but all who attend, is definitely part of the fun.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia is held in April/May in Sydney every year as a trade event. But from August 21 – 25 2012, the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney hits town to showcase to the general public Australia’s leading designer brands and retailers.
