With the exhibition set to feature classic Australian landscapes alongside portraits of beloved – and less popular– public figures, the Archibald Prize exhibition has been a popular fixture on the Australian arts calendar since 1921. Although the winner is selected by trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW, members of the public can nominate their favourite artwork for the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Each year, the Helpmann Awards recognise and celebrate those who have made significant contributions to Australia’s live performing arts scene. With award categories including dance, cabaret, musical theatre, opera and comedy, they are considered by many to be the Australian equivalent of the Tony Awards (U.S.) and the Olivier Awards (U.K.). This year, the ceremony will take place at the illustrious Sydney Lyric Theatre, with live performances from Sarah Blasko, Marina Prior, The West Australian Ballet and more, plus performance excerpts from popular musicals such as Singin’ in the Rain, The Sound of Music and Matilda.

The inaugural competition was held in 1977, with subsequent editions held every four years since. In 1978, it was the first Australian event to be admitted as a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions.
