Photographer Derek Feebrey is the founder and creative force behind Splash Imagery. Specialising in landscape photography, his passion is capturing beach life in Sydney’s Eastern Beaches, from Bondi Beach, to Maroubra.
Derek’s images are known for their bold, vibrant colours which capture the dynamic beauty of the beach landscape. His work has been described as ‘photographic art’ due to their impressionist nature.
Derek grew up in Bondi, and now resides in the small beachside suburb of Clovelly. From here he sets off to capture iconic and timeless images of the coastline and it’s people, an insight into local culture and daily life. “No matter how many times I explore the area, it always offers new angles and aspects to photograph”.
His favourite time of day to photograph is during the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest. “the sun reflects off the sea bed and turns the water into an exquisite aqua colour, creating idyllic scenes truly representative of a summer day at the beach”. However sunset and sunrise can also produce some of the most amazing colours, “in the afternoon if I see high cirrus clouds drifting over, I get excited as I know when the sun sets that those clouds will turn bright reds and pinks.”
Photography has been an artistic outlet from Derek’s structured life as a pilot. He describes photography as being a complete contrast to aviation, which is very procedural and regulated. What started as a hobby has now turned into his business. Derek recently finished developing his website, www.splashimagery.com.au. It was launched in January 2014 and now enables Derek to reach a far broader audience.
The following images have been selected to represent the life of Sydney’s Eastern Beaches………. a locals insight.
