Art Gallery Of NSW, City Centre

Established in the 1870s, the Art Gallery of NSW has long been the place to see some of the world’s most celebrated artworks. With around 30,000 pieces in its collection there’s lots to see, with homegrown and international artists exhibits showcasing a wide range of styles.  The gallery can be found a short walk through the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens, and is a great place to spend the afternoon come rain or shine.

Museum Of Contemporary Art, The Rocks

Modern and forward-thinking, the MCA was opened in 1991 to showcase vibrant and engaging contemporary art and ideas. The gallery presents a variety of interesting exhibitions and special events celebrating the best in contemporary art. From emerging artists to world class international artists, the MCA has over 4000 pieces in its collection and hosts an assortment of exhibitions celebrating broad and diverse styles.

White Rabbit Gallery, Chippendale

Explore the White Rabbit Gallery and discover the best in Chinese contemporary art. Filled with beautiful pieces, the renovated gallery space (formerly a Rolls-Royce service depot) now boasts an extensive collection of around 2500 works from more than 500 artists. Since its opening in 2009 the gallery has hosted an eclectic range of events, from book clubs to tours. Take some time out in the teahouse, sip on herbal Chinese and Taiwanese teas and enjoy some tasty homemade dumplings.  

S.H. Ervin Gallery, The Rocks

The S.H. Ervin Gallery showcases both historic and contemporary pieces from Australian artists. Located in the National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, the gallery is housed in a beautiful 19th century building designed by Henry Robertson. Head here to see a variety of exhibitions, from homegrown artists and annual shows including the alternative Archibald and Wynne Prize.

Brett Whiteley Studio, Surry Hills

See art history at the Brett Whiteley Studio, the former workplace and home of legendary Australian artist Brett Whiteley. The converted studio was turned into an open gallery a few years after the artist’s death in 1992. Discover the world of Brett Whiteley and see this incredible collection of unfinished paintings and art equipment as well as famous artworks and memorabilia.

Artspace, Woolloomooloo

Established in 1983, Artspace is an artist-run gallery committed to the creation and exhibiting of contemporary art. Showcasing the best in new art through performances, artist residencies, public programs and more, Artspace aims to create a cultural community across Australia. Open daily, head to Artspace to discover cool local artists and competitions.

Wentworth Gallery, City Centre

A Sydney favourite for over 20 years, Wentworth Gallery showcases beautiful Australian contemporary art and acclaimed Indigenous artworks. Featuring some of Australia’s most celebrated artists, the Wentworth Gallery transcends genre. The Martin Place gallery is open daily and offers art rental, buying and more.

Gallery 9, Darlinghurst

Explore contemporary art at Gallery 9, a cool art space with a regular programme of exciting art events and exhibitions.
