This December Sydney comes alive with some of the top events of this year’s calendar. From the critically-acclaimed musical Matilda, to the chance to see some of the wold’s most renowned and precious artworks or Sydney Harbour city’s second-to-none New Year’s Eve celebrations, there’s plenty to keep you entertained this month. Here are 5 of the top events taking place in December.
There’s no doubt that Sydney Harbour is the place to be to ring in the New Year. The spectacular New Year’s Eve Fireworks are one of the most amazing (and quintessential) Sydney experiences you can have in summer. Grab a spot on the harbour to see the city come alive in a display like no other as you ring in the New Year. Many of the city’s hotels get into the spirit with festive New Year’s Eve events, special meals and accommodation packages.
The spectacular Sydney Harbour plays host to the Extreme Sailing Series, the last leg of the award-winning stadium racing global circuit where the series champions will be crowned. Now in its ninth season, thousands of spectators are expected to line the waterfront at Mrs Macquarie’s Point to watch champion sailors race their Extreme 40 catamarans between the Royal Botanic Gardens and Sydney Opera House.
With more than 70 outstanding and iconic works, The Greats: masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland is on show at the Art Gallery of NSW this December. Spanning a period of more than 400 years from the Renaissance to Impressionism, this is your chance to experience an extraordinary and richly-presented showcase of works from some the world’s most revered old masters, with works from the likes of Botticelli, Rembrandt and Monet. All but two of the artworks will be seen in Australia for the first time, including Botticelli’s exceptional ‘Virgin adoring the sleeping Christ child’ (c1485).
See Roald Dahl’s classic tale brought to life at the Sydney Lyric Theatre with Matilda the Musical. The story tells the tale of an extraordinary girl who is determined to change her own story, even if it means being a little bit naughty. Having enjoyed success on both Broadway and London’s West End, Matilda the Musical features original music by the brilliant Australian comedian and composer Tim Minchin. As the recipient of 47 international awards, including 12 for Best Musical, the musical has also earned a place in the Book of Guinness World Records.
Each year, the AACTA Awards Ceremony sees Australia’s favourite stars of the big and small screens come together to celebrate and honour Australia’s best screen performers and productions of the year. Now is your chance to attend the 5th Annual AACTA Awards at The Star in Pyrmont. Walk the red carpet at Australia’s Film and Television night of nights!
