New Year's Eve in Sydney

Celebrate with family and friends the world-famous Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks on beautiful Sydney Harbour. The magical night on one of the world’s great natural harbours is unforgettable, with many delightful options to experience the amazing spectacle and welcome the New Year.

Be sure to plan your night in advance and use public transport. Public viewing areas are dotted around the foreshore, including in the Sydney Harbour National Park. You can party on an island in the middle of the harbour, such as Clark Island and Shark Island, or revel aboard a cruise boat.

For opera lovers, reserve your seats at the Sydney Opera House for the Opera Gala or The Merry Widow. The intervals are timed for the 9pm fireworks and the World Heritage-listed building, with sweeping views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, stays open for the midnight fireworks extravaganza.

Darling Harbour is a popular family destination. A short walk from Town Hall Station or alight at one of the light rail stops, the vibrant entertainment precinct hosts brilliant light shows from 7pm and marvellous fireworks at 9pm and midnight. There are plenty of delicious waterside restaurants, too.

Sky and rooftop bars offer magnificent harbour vistas. For a bird’s-eye view of the harbour, check out what’s on at Sydney Tower Eye. Luxury hotels on the edge of the harbour also offer splendid views as well as party and accommodation options to ring in the New Year in the harbour city.

Getting in and out of the city centre is different on New Year’s Eve. There will be road closures, on-street fencing and diversions to help people get around safely and move crowds to transport. Visit the City of Sydney’s Plan your NYE for details on what you need to know for a memorable night out.
