Exploring Sydney’s Dining Scene

In the heart of the city you’ll find some of Sydney’s best and most well-known restaurants. Neil Perry’s fine dining venture Rockpool is a true Sydney institution, as is the famed Quay at Circular Quay, its food matched only by its stunning Sydney Harbour views. Tucked beneath the sails of the Sydney Opera House, Peter Gilmore’s Bennelong also offers great harbour vistas, accompanied by a menu filled with fine Australian produce.

For a dining experience nothing short of transcendent, book in at the exceptional Tetsuya’s on Kent Street, renowned for its delicate, elegant fusion of French and Japanese cuisine. Cafe Sydney’s spectacular view remains a must-see, while the kitchen delivers an expert menu of modern Australian cuisine built on fresh, quality ingredients - especially seafood.

Across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, on the north side, you’ll find Aqua Dining, where you can take in the sweeping cityscape views while dining from an impressive modern Australian menu. On Sydney’s Northern Beaches there’s a wealth of celebrated dining options to choose from. Local favourite Jonah’s Whale Beach serves upmarket, succulent seafood overlooking the ocean, while nearby Barrenjoey House is ideal for a special occasion, chic yet relaxed, with a menu to match. And Mosman icon The Bathers’ Pavilion at Balmoral is stylish and comfortable, with beautiful ocean views.

Longrain Restaurant, Surry Hills

To the city’s east, head to Potts Point and check out The Apollo, Monopole and Ms.G's. Catalina Rose Bay has unobstructed harbour views and a perfectly executed seafood-heavy, european-influenced menu. Don’t miss Icebergs at the southern end of Bondi beach, which overlooks Bondi Beach’s ocean pool and the beach itself. Unsurprisingly, seafood is the star of the menu, which uses seasonal produce and is strongly Italian influenced. And on Bondi beach’s northern tip is the impeccable Sean’s Panorama, a small, homey restaurant driven by fresh local produce and with a constantly changing, quality menu.

There’s nowhere better to get to grips with the lobster roll craze than Waterman’s Lobster Co in Potts Point. But if crustacean on a bun isn’t your thing, there’s plenty more on the menu to like ‐ kingfish tartare with radishes and seaweed, anyone? You’re in safe hands on the wine side, too: Waterman’s co‐owners are also behind acclaimed sommelier‐speakeasy Love Tilly Devine in Darlinghurst.

Up on Crown Street, in Surry Hills, Bang has made a splash, celebrating the food of Bangladesh in rare style and with a flair for flavour.

For smoke and flame of a more literal kind, it has to be Firedoor. One of the most hotly anticipated openings in many a year, the Surry Hills dining spot is unusual in that 100 per cent of the savoury cooking is done over the coals. It’s smokin’ stuff.
