Sydney Craft Beer Week: More art than craft

11 October 2013

Sydney craft beer week

Sydney Craft Beer Week has arrived! From October 19 anyone who calls themselves a lover of this artfully and lovingly created brew will be found at one of the many beer events on offer.

However, as organiser and craft connoisseur Todd Venning points out, the festival is for all levels of craft beer lovers – including those who only head along for the food.

Director of the week Joel Connolly has a few pointers:

“In Sydney alone,” he said, “there are 10 breweries, from Manly to Parramatta. In some restaurants and bars, the beer menu is almost as long as the wine list”.

More than 60 events are planned for roughly 40 venues around the city, and tickets are still on sale.

Categories are separated to suit all levels of beer fans.

If you fall into the ‘l like beer’ section, then you will be offered a selection of beer-related activities such as the Brewers Bowl Off at Manhattan Bowl, where you get to enjoy your craft beer while bowling your way to glory in the alleys.

Then there’s the ‘I really like beer’ category. If that’s you, there are a whole range of activities geared towards those who, well, really like their craft beers. This includes a tour of 4 Pines brewery with lunch and the chance to head along to watch four expert brewers battle it out at the Spooning Goats for your votes to win bragging rights as the night’s favourites.

For the serious craft beer fans, aka, if you would proudly declare: ‘I really, really like beer’, then this hard-core category is for you. Check out the Beer & Brewer Conference (yes, it exists) at The Sebel Hotel Surry Hills to hear experts speak about topics like how to start a microbrewery, and the beer business itself. Or, head to the delicious-sounding Festival of the Froth at The Pumphouse for tastings of some of their best brews and chats with the brewers.

Alternatively, you might fall into the category simply titled ‘I like food’. If you’re in it for the food, try the Ladies High tea at Harts Pub, or join in the great debate at the Beer vs Wine tasting event at the Fix St James for a night of tastings and arguments you won’t soon forget.

Visitors to the city should look at booking in their Sydney accommodation to make sure they have a good spot near all the hot bars with cool drinks!
