Talk - When negatives become positives
Saturday 01 February 2020
Karen Grega is an experienced senior manager having held CEO positions with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) - Home of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, the Sydney Olympic Park Business Association and the Inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games in Australia. The personal challenge Karen outlines in her talk saw her utilise her skills in research, lateral thinking, coupled with a ‘can-do’ attitude and will to succeed, in a matter much closer to her heart.
An unassuming cardboard box containing 28 rolls of her father’s undeveloped black and white films over 60 years old kicked-off an amazing family history journey for Karen, with sporting fields giving way to WW2 battlefields in Central and Eastern Europe and sugar cane fields in North Queensland.
Piecing together the documented life of her father and uncle, Karen has traced their escape from war-ravaged Slovakia, to life in a displaced persons’ camp in Ludwigsburg, Germany, followed by their journey to Melbourne on board the migrant ship ‘The Anna Salen’, before being dispatched another 2,500 kilometres to Tully as cane-cutters for the Queensland Government.
