Mary's Underground


The concept of dinner and a show got a lot cooler when Mary’s Underground opened. The guys behind Mary’s, the Newtown burger bar, took over famed live music site The Basement and sexed it up a notch. First up, the food. The full-service restaurant serves up seriously fancy stuff, including lobster with duck fat chips and dry-aged duck while the wine list has a natural, organic bent. The Clam Bar, just off the main restaurant, is all about seafood and natural wine. The music is free and all part of the fun. Following in The Basement’s footsteps, jazz is the predominant musical flavour. There’s a five piece brass band that plays on Friday nights and it’s a rotating roster of acts the other evenings.
