The park's historical importance stems from its opening in 1926 under the patronage of Mayor John Colquhoun, and its continued use as a community recreational space.
John Colquhoun's story is one of remarkable achievement. A Scottish immigrant who arrived in Australia as a miner with limited resources, he demonstrated great entrepreneurial spirit. He began by selling second-hand bags, bottles, and cans, gradually building a thriving business that expanded as the agricultural sectors in New South Wales and Australia grew. His business eventually included procuring and repairing damaged jute bags from shipping.
Colquhoun served multiple terms as a Granville Municipal alderman and was elected Mayor of Granville four times. During his mayoral terms, he recognised the need for recreational spaces amidst the area's rapid growth. He purchased the land that would become Colquhoun Park, intending it as a recreational haven for local families. Tragically, John Colquhoun died unexpectedly on the very day of the park's official opening.
