The main road into the National Park from the north drops quickly from the heights to Audley, where it crosses the Hacking River on a weir before climbing up the other side of the valley to continue further into the park.
Audley developed into a small village of amusements, surrounded by 'pleasure gardens'. It was popular with holidaymakers and honeymooners.
Audley features extensive picnic areas, boat hire facilities from a heritage listed timber boathouse, a bike track and a visitor's centre. Audley is also the location of the administrative headquarters for the Royal National Park.
Audley Dance Hall Cafe is a timber dance hall which was built here in the 1940s, on the eastern bank and still stands today.
