Modern Interaction Sculpture Exhibition
Overview
Modern Interaction is a new exhibition of contemporary sculpture by Sydney artists Nicky McGinn and Margaret Fitzgerald. The show represents a sustained artistic dialogue spanning three decades, investigating the spatial and material possibilities of abstract form.
The collection asserts a firm grounding in the principles of mid-century modernism while actively pushing the medium into new territories. Fitzgerald and McGinn present a compelling survey of works in stone and bronze, including meticulously carved marble, alabaster and soapstone. These deeply tactile pieces reference the organic, undulating visual language of mid-century pioneers like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, yet distill those influences through a highly refined, contemporary lens.
Challenging traditional material hierarchies, the exhibition introduces an innovative new metallic series. By integrating bold metallic finishes with classic stone, plaster and glass, the artists subvert the expectations of classical sculpture. This dynamic work sits in striking contrast to recent bronze pieces that explore aesthetic restraint and structural tension. Developed within the esteemed Tom Bass Sculpture Studio School community, the works demonstrate a profound mastery of the carving process.
Modern Interaction offers a critical examination of how historical sculptural vocabularies can be recontextualised for the twenty-first century, presenting a sophisticated and necessary evolution of Australian abstract sculpture.
