Sydney is packed with kid-friendly things to do
Mild winter weather makes mid-year a perfect time to get out and explore, with most attractions close to the city or easily accessible by public transport.
Take a virtual tour to the moon, planets or another solar system at the Sydney Observatory in The Rocks where you’ll see the universe come to life through amazing 3D technology. Head off on a different voyage of discovery under the sea or through the human body at the world's largest IMAX Theatre in Darling Harbour. Take the express lift to The Sydney Tower Eye, the city's tallest structure standing 250 metres high, and be wowed by the views from the observation desk. If the family is feeling adventurous, Skywalk on a glass platform outside the tower, or scale the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Interactive, child-focused exhibits make Sydney’s museums a hit during winter. Close to Circular Quay, the Justice and Police Museum allows kids to play cop for a day in a thrilling exploration of law and order. Nearby, the Australian Museum has an excellent dedicated area for under-fives. Check out their current exhibition Tyrannosaurs, and get up close and personal with the T-Rex and family as newly found fossils from China and the US make their first appearance in Australia.
At Darling Harbour, kids of all ages can board a fleet of historic craft in the Australian National Maritime Museum, or marvel at the technical and scientific wizardry of the Powerhouse Museum. Madame Tussauds is lots of fun for the whole family – all the stars are here in waxed perfection.
Meet a gentle dugong at the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, right on Sydney Harbour at King Street Wharf. Interact with animals at Taronga Zoo or see the great fish of the sea at Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary, a short ferry ride from the city.
Keep the kids active at Sydney Olympic Park, where they can learn a new skill at the Archery Centre, discover trapeze through Circus Arts, or splash around in the heated indoor Aquatic Centre. Hire bikes and explore 35 km of off-road cycle paths around Bicentennial Park, along the Parramatta River. Ride a bike or pony through nearby Centennial Park. Alternately, hop on a harbour ferry for a laid-back tour of the waterfront.
Sydney’s family-friendly beaches are an attraction all year round. Rug up and let the kids play on the sand or in one of the city’s many beachside playgrounds, while you sip a coffee or nibble on fish and chips.
