Kerwayne Berry: TLC Texture Light Colour
Overview
Following the 2022 exhibition Lightfall at Artsite Contemporary, Kerwayne Berry's new body of work represents two years (2023–2025) of continued exploration into the enduring presence of nature and its emotional resonance.
Rooted in an obsession with the elemental, these paintings evoke the texture of rock and stone, the shifting hues of Australia's turbulent skies, and the stillness or movement of water. Rather than literal representation, the works transform these motifs through a semi-abstract language, where what is seen merges with what is felt.
Light remains the central force — shaping, revealing, and animating every surface. Through mixed media and oil, the paintings build in layers, balancing depth and stillness with sudden flashes of colour that recall those fleeting moments when nature halts our attention. Each work invites slow looking, revealing new depths over time.
The title TLC gestures toward both the painter's attentive process and the fragile beauty of the natural world. It speaks to tenderness — to care in observation, patience in layering, and reverence for light as both subject and substance. Ultimately, TLC is less about representation than about presence: an offering of time, attention, and the quiet wonder of being in dialogue with nature.
