Located at Bradleys Head, this historic site features the towering mast of HMAS Sydney I which saw action in Australia's first naval battle of World War I.

The mast was saved when the ship was taken apart in 1928 and was set up at Bradleys Head in 1934. It stands about 17 m high and includes parts used for spotting enemy ships. It sits on top of stone fortifications built in the 1840s, which are also heritage protected.

Take a stroll beyond the central monument along the Memorial Walk, a path lined with 23 plaques and commemorative tree plantings. Each plaque honours a Royal Australian Navy ship lost in conflict, offering a place for reflection and recognition of the dangers sailors faced and the bravery they showed at sea.

Another interesting feature is a Doric column that once stood at the old Sydney General Post Office. It was moved to Bradleys Head in 1871 and marks one nautical mile from Fort Denison. Sailors once used it to test how fast their ships could travel.

It's the only naval memorial in Australia where all Australian and foreign naval ships must perform a formal salute when passing.
