Whether hurtling along a river, jumping from a plane or abseiling down a cliff, New South Wales (NSW) has it made when it comes to adventure sports. Whatever the season, adventure awaits in NSW; choose from a wide variety of activities and experiences, all with easy access to tour operators and local guides.
In Sydney, kick things off with some high-speed sightseeing with a jet boat ride around Sydney Harbour. Shark boats blast across the iconic Sydney Harbour at up to 75km per hour - get a sense of this breathtaking city with Oz Jet Boating or Harbour Jet for an action-packed jet boating adventure.
Skydiving is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can be a part of. Go tandem skydiving over the beautiful Wollongong Beach with Skydive the Beach, an award-winning adventure tourism company. Head to the Hunter Valley for a hot air balloon ride with Balloon Safaris for aerial views at a more leisurely pace.
In the colder months, snow lovers should head to the Snowy Mountains. Skiers and snowboarders can hit the slopes for some downhill thrills in Kosciuszko National Park, or join a tour with Oz Snow Adventures. In summertime, ‘The Snowy’ is a haven for bushwalking, horseriding and mountain biking.
If water sports are more your thing, there are plenty of great beaches to check out, with surf schools all over NSW. Learn to surf with Surf Camp Australia at Seven Mile Beach in the Shoalhaven, or at Byron Bay on the NSW North Coast. You can also learn to sail or go parasailing in Port Stephens.
For something a little more challenging, head to the spectacular Blue Mountains for abseiling, rock climbing and canyoning. The Blue Mountains Adventure Company offers all three, from introductory lessons to sessions for the more experienced climber. It’s also a great spot for mountain biking, or you can sign up for a bush survival course, an overnight camping trip that teaches you survival skills like navigation, finding bush tucker, how to light a fire, and keep dry and safe.
