Family-friendly Sydney beaches

Sydneysiders love their beaches and, for kids, there's no better place to have fun. Some of Sydney's best beaches for families are found in pretty locations in the inner harbour such as Nielsen Park in the eastern suburbs and Balmoral Beach on the north side of the city. Swim in the netted pools, paddle in the sheltered waters or enjoy a picnic in the shady parklands nearby.

Coogee Beach is protected from big swells by the picturesque Wedding Cake Island, making it one of the city's most family-friendly beaches in Sydney. Wylies Bath, the historic sea pool at the southern end, provides a netted and quiet alternative if you have young children. South Cronulla Beach is sandy with gentle waves, perfect for swimming, building sandcastles or exploring the surrounding rock pools.

Manly Beach is one of the popular north side beaches that has all the essential ingredients for a great day at the beach. A short walk from the Corso takes you to pretty Shelly Beach, which is in sheltered bay. Enjoy fresh fish'n chip shops, good coffee and gelato at any number of cafes on the Manly beachfront. You can even hop on ferry at Manly Wharf for a quick trip back to Circular Quay.

Other beach activities range from snorkelling - at Shelley Beach and Chowder Bay - to learn to surf lessons for older kids.

Most Sydney beaches are patrolled by surf lifesavers throughout summer. Make sure you are aware of beach safety tips.

Surf Life Saving

Always swim between the red and yellow flags surf lifesavers have identified this area as the safest spot to swim in the water. It's also a good idea to always swim with a friend.

Make sure you read any safety signs at the beach and you are always welcome to ask lifeguards for more safety advice. If you find yourself needing help in the water, stay calm and attract attention.
