No visit to Sydney is complete without some time spent riding the waves, and here, you can choose from around 70 great surf beaches.

Need a lesson? Beginners can find accredited surf schools at many area beaches, each school offering its own unique techniques for teaching you how to catch a wave.

For an iconic Sydney surfing experience with experienced teachers who know the waves, head to Bondi or Manly. Let's Go Surfing has helped numerous beginners get out on the waves. Manly Surf School Hire in the Northern Beaches has schools at Manly Beach, Palm Beach and Collaroy Beach.  Beginners may want to consider Bronte, Long Reef or Palm Beach. You can also learn to surf at Maroubra.

If you already know the basics, a Surfari may be just what you're looking for. The most popular adventure is the five-day excursion, but different packages are available. The trips – which include accommodation, transport and equipment hire – operate every week of the year. Alternatively, for a one-day guided surf safari, head to Manly.

Australian Open of Surfing

With Sydney's great reputation for surf, it's no surprise that the city hosts the Australian Open of Surfing in Manly every year in February. As well as watching the world's best surfers compete, the festival includes, skateboarding, BMX riding, live music and stalls.

Hiring equipment at Manly

There are a number of shops in Manly where you can hire everything you need: Manly Surf School provides surfboards, bodyboards, wetsuits and stand-up paddleboards. You can also hire kayaks, bikes, inline skates and more.

Surf Camp Australia

Located near a great beginning surfer's beach in Gerroa on the NSW South Coast, Surf Camp Australia has provided overnight learn-to-surf camps since 1999. Camp packages include surfing instruction, surfing equipment, modern beachside accommodation and buffet-style meals and return transport from Sydney and Wollongong.

School holidays surf schools

If you're looking for a great holiday activity for your children, Let's Go Surfing also offers weekend drop-in for kids aged seven and up who love to surf and partake in safe and supervised fun.

Surf schools in Sydney

Surf's up. Sydney now has four beaches that are recognised as national surfing reserves - Manly and North Narrabeen, Cronulla and Maroubra. You too can take advantage of the great waves in Sydney and if you can't already glide along the water on a board, learn how to surf an accredited surf school at one of Sydney's favourite beaches. Surfing adventure tours are becoming an increasingly popular way to visit remote beaches in national parks. Based in Bronte, the innovative Surf's Up School offers weekend surf retreats, five-day Sydney to Byron Bay tours and one-day Sydney 4WD adventures. 

Some of the best displays of surf skills are seen by watching the surf lifesavers practice so watch the ocean in front a surf lifesaving club or on Sundays join the locals as their kids learn the basics of having fun in a safe beach environment at nippers or junior lifesaving.
