Gillian Kayrooz and L-FRESH The LION ‘The Sky Between Us’
Overview
The practices of leading Western Sydney artists Gillian Kayrooz and L-FRESH The LION are deeply embedded in their experiences of growing up in Western Sydney. 'The Sky Between Us' is a new audiovisual artwork which draws on the Campbelltown sky as a shared space. At once physically present and metaphorically vast. Where memory, history, and the possibilities of the future converge.
Made in collaboration with five emerging Campbelltown artists, Rose Bahatta, Rozana Dedovic, Japneet Kaur Saini (JAPI), RIAH and Kingston L Vaaulu, the work centres places of personal significance within Campbelltown. It looks at how local histories move between generations and how communities actively shape the narratives that define them. 'The Sky Between Us' considers how young people share the same sky as those who came before them, a living thread between past and present.
Accompanied by works from the Campbelltown City Council Art Collection and Campbelltown Arts Centre exhibition archive by Abdul Abdullah, Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, Kate Blackmore and Tom Polo, 'The Sky Between Us' positions young people as active contributors to an evolving cultural record of Campbelltown, and to the ongoing question of who shapes the story of a place.
