Must Do

Boutique shopping in Paddington

From Armani to Zara and all designer labels in between, Sydney’s reputation as Australia’s fashion capital is unchallenged. Head for Market Street in the CBD, which connects with the city’s three main shopping thoroughfares: George and Castlereagh streets and Pitt Street Mall. From here you are close to the international likes of Miu Miu, Hugo Boss, Bottega Veneta and Karen Millen; homegrown designers such as Saba, Carla Zampatti and Zimmermann; London’s fabled Topshop; and the architecturally splendid Queen Victoria Building (QVB), full of consumer delights.

Nearby is Strand Arcade, with its eclectic mix of stores; then there’s Tiffany and Prada, Bulgari, Brooks Brothers and Jimmy Choo in the neighbourhood. At the flagship David Jones and Myer stores and the bustling Westfield Sydney, you’ll find more local designers, including Camilla, Dion Lee, Ginger & Smart, Camilla and Marc, Sass & Bide and Tigerlily.

If you’re after a uniquely Australian souvenir, there are many excellent options. Joe Bananas specialises in exquisite raw silk jackets and linen and silk shirts in limited-edition designs inspired by Australia’s oceans, rock formations and flora. Elton John once bought out the entire stock. Find outlets at the QVB or The Rocks.

When it comes to hats, Akubra couldn’t be more Aussie (check out Country Classics Australia in the QVB). Or have a look at Helen Kaminski’s raffia creations, now in demand globally. Find Kaminski’s hats at David Jones, the Four Seasons in George Street and Strand Hatters in Strand Arcade.

For indigenous art, browse The Rocks end of George Street, or for a shortcut to a one-stop shop for beautiful and authentic contemporary Aboriginal arts and crafts to suit any budget, visit Rozelle’s Tali Gallery. There’s jewellery, homewares, scarves, prints and artworks of all sizes, ethically sourced directly from Aboriginal art centres and artists.

One-of-a-kind jewellery

Samantha Willis Jewellery

If you’re after a uniquely Australian souvenir, there are many excellent options. Resin jewellery and homewares are the signature pieces from Dinosaur Designs, which began in 1985 when three Sydney art students started selling their wares at Paddington Markets, and has since become a worldwide success. Find Dinosaur Designs stores in Paddington’s Oxford Street and Strand Arcade.

The bohemian-luxe jewellery designed by Port Macquarie-born, New York-based Samantha Wills is worn by such notables as Lady Gaga, Drew Barrymore and The Veronicas. Pick up your own precious pieces at David Jones.
