Sydney events

January is Sydney Festival time, and throughout the month the city is transformed by a dynamic and bold celebration of arts, culture and entertainment. Each year’s program is kaleidoscopic in its diversity, offering entertainment in the form of burlesque circus, contemporary dance, international theatre companies and the ever-popular free concerts in The Domain.

Sydney also celebrates Lunar New Year in typically spectacular fashion every January. Enjoy spectacular dragon boat races, markets, and, of course, fabulous food. Wander through the city to Pyrmont Bay Park for the Lunar Markets, a pop-up food festival with a range of delicious Asian dishes.

Mardi Gras Parade, Sydney

The Sydney Mardi Gras is the world's most joyous and spectacular celebration of LGBTQI pride. In February, Sydney Mardi Gras attracts over 20,000 interstate and international visitors to a diverse and exciting line-up of events. This event delivers a phenomenal atmosphere amid the iconic surroundings of Sydney.

Every winter, Vivid Sydney transforms the city and other designated areas into a wonderland of light sculptures, innovative light installations and grand-scale projections for all to enjoy - for free. Vivid Sydney is the largest event of its kind in Australia with a world-class line-up of concert and music performances, public ideas programs, creative industry workshops and conferences.

It is a magical celebration of excellence.

Experience New Year's Eve in Sydney

New Years Eve, Sydney Harbour Bridge 2015

Sydney’s world-famous show kicks off from 6pm when thrilling air displays take over the skies above the harbour, fire tugs create striking water displays and traditional custodians perform a Welcome to Country.

At 9pm, a special fireworks display for kids and families is followed by an enchanting Harbour of Light Parade®. On the strike of midnight, dazzling fireworks erupt from barges on the water, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. Make sure you start planning your New Year’s Eve experience early.

There are plenty of excellent vantage points around the waterway from which to enjoy the show. The Sydney Opera House, the Royal Botanic Garden and Sydney’s tiny harbour islands welcome in the New Year with ticketed events that will give you a prime spot for the night. Taronga Zoo at Mosman is another prized location for the big night, while Darling Harbour’s 9pm fireworks are perfect for the kids.

An alternative location is on a cruise on Sydney Harbour where you’ll enjoy great food and wine and 360-degree views of the city, the harbour and the bridge.
