Explore Sydney Harbour on foot

Looking for a walking challenge that takes in some of Sydney's best harbourside locations? The Sydney Harbour Circle Walk winds its way around the harbour, from Sydney Harbour Bridge to Gladesville Bridge, just west of the city centre. Along this grand 59km-walk, you'll pass through urban bushland, and leafy harbourside suburbs such as Greenwich, Hunters Hill and Balmain. Split the walk into manageable sections using public transport to help get you around.

Forget planes, trains and automobiles – the best way to get around Sydney and its top attractions is by bike or on foot.

In the city centre, walking is arguably the best way to see some of the major attractions. Many of the main sights - such as Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, the Rocks, Darling Harbour, the Royal Botanic Gardens and historic Macquarie Street – are within easy walking distance of each other. There are also some stunning harbourside and coastal walks around Sydney such as the Manly to Spit Bridge walk or the Bondi to Coogee coastal trail. These special walks offer magnificent views and scenery.

Visitor information centres have information on both self-guided walks and walking tours, either escorted or self-guided using an MP3 player.

Cycling is also very popular in Sydney and there are some great cycleways around the city, suburbs and harbour. All you need is a bike and a helmet (necessary by law) and you’re set to go. Alternatively, you can join an escorted bike tour or hire your own bike.

Popular cycleways include a winding 35km through Homebush Park near Sydney Olympic Park, and the 8km ‘Bay Run’ around the harbour, via Rozelle and Drummoyne. Another popular option is to hire a bike for the day and ride around beautiful Centennial Parklands.
