Newcastle is a harbour city surrounded by amazing surf beaches that are linked by a great coastal walk, the Bathers Way. The walk from Nobbys Beach to Merewether Beach takes about three hours and is a great way to explore the city.
Perched between a working harbour and beautiful beaches, Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, with a rich maritime history, vibrant arts culture, cool bars, acclaimed restaurants and accommodation options aplenty. Merewether Beach is also one of Australia's National Surfing Reserves and home to the international Surfest surfing competition held in February each year.
The emerging food scene in Newcastle is evident in the great restaurants, bars and outdoor cafes around the city. Sip cocktails at one of the many harbourside restaurants or bars at Honeysuckle or head to Beaumont Street in Hamilton to dine at outdoor mediterranean-style cafes. Darby Street, in Cooks Hill, is a bohemian strip with eclectic boutiques, bookshops and cafes just perfect for a late breakfast.
Port Stephens is a 40-minute drive from Newcastle. As well as beautiful waterways, Port Stephens is a great place to see dolphins in the wild and take a whale-watching cruise. Meanwhile, if you fancy a trip to a Hunter Valley vineyards, it's only an hours' drive from Newcastle.
