Auburn Maintenance Centre

The former Clyde Railway Marshalling Yards, hold significant historical importance as a testament to the progress and expansion of the New South Wales Railway System. This site, once a major centre for railway engineering and carriage building, specialised in wagon repairs and was one of the few large suburban workshops in the state. While only remnants of the yards persist, they highlight the site's historical function. The yards also illustrate the close relationship between the New South Wales Railways and local industries, as evidenced by the remnant sidings and branch lines that served nearby industrial sites, many of which were involved in railway track and rolling stock production.
The Auburn Maintenance Centre (AMC) continues the Auburn community's long association with railway history, which began in the 1860s when the New South Wales government sourced rolling stock from local manufacturer Henry Vale & Co. Today, the AMC stands as a state-of-the-art facility, opened in 2010 by John Holland on the site of the former Clyde Marshalling Yards. Operated by Downer Rail, this crucial hub for Sydney Trains maintains the A, B, and M set rail fleets, representing nearly half of Sydney’s passenger trains.
