MV in Focus: Central Otago
Overview
Once a month, Mothervine shines a spotlight on a specific region or country.
Central Otago is the world's southernmost wine region, lies on the 45th parallel, and is New Zealand's only wine region with a truly continental climate. It champions Pinot Noir above all else.
With day and night temperature swings being significant, winemakers try to maximise sun exposure by mostly planting on northern-facing slopes, as grapes grown on the Southern-facing slopes can struggle to ripen on occasion. Alongside Pinot Noir, the region can produce high-quality examples of Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.
The region is known for excellent producers such as Felton Road, Valli, Mt Difficulty, and Rippon.
