Theatre Performance and Festivals in Sydney

Sydney's famous for its entertainment scene, a heady mix of world-class theatre, contemporary dance productions, festivals and the hottest touring acts in town.

For big name stars and cutting-edge theatre productions, Sydney is the place. Good smaller theatres around Sydney are situated around Surry Hills, Elizabether Bay and Newtown. Fans of musical theatre should head to The Capitol Theatre, an opulent venue that's like stepping back in time to the 1930s. And if you love contemporary dance or ballet, you can't beat a performance at The Sydney Opera House.

Touring music acts flock to Sydney's huge choice of venues, from vast stadiums to smaller venues. If you're seeing a band at The Entertainment Centre in Haymarket, dumplings before (or after) the show at the Chinatown Night Market are a must. Otherwise, catch dinner and a show at some of the intimate supper clubs in Circular Quay, Newtown and Balmain.

Sydney's festival scene is legendary, too, particularly in summer. In January, the Sydney Festival celebrates theatre, art, music and dance – and world-famous Mardi Gras, a celebration of gay, lesbian and transsexual pride, lights up the city in March with parades, parties and more.
