Sydney is a lively city bustling with theatre, shows, dance and other performances catering to a wide range of audiences. Located in Sydney Harbour, the iconic Sydney Opera House hosts some of the biggest names in music, theatre and comedy. Highlights include performances by the Australian Ballet, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Bell Shakespeare Company and Opera Australia. Regular backstage tours of the Sydney Opera House are also available.

The State Theatre, Sydney Lyric Theatre and the Belvoir St Theatre host an array of great shows year-round, and Walsh Bay, just minutes’ walk from The Rocks, is home to a number of notable arts venues including the Wharf Theatre and Sydney Dance Company. The Sydney Theatre is also located here, performing an annual 12-play program consisting of bold new Australian plays and interpretations of its classic repertoire, featuring some of the country's finest actors. Walsh Bay is also home to Bangarra, Australia's leading Indigenous performing arts company, known for its inspirational contemporary dance performances.

The performing arts scene of Sydney’s city fringe also has a lot to offer. The Griffin Theatre Company has its residency at the historic SBW Stables in Kings Cross and is an engine-room for theatrical discovery and diversity, while Slide Lounge in nearby Darlinghurst offers weekly cabaret shows. Just down the road is the popular Belvoir St Theatre in Surry Hills, one of Australia's most respected and celebrated theatre companies. In bohemian Newtown you’ll find a thriving theatre scene, with the Seymour Centre and the Enmore Theatre, as well as King Street Theatre, which is home to the acclaimed Short + Sweet festival.
