Highlights

Sydney is a haven for theatre and shows with some of the country’s top stages and the world’s most iconic venues. The Sydney Opera House is the pinnacle of entertainment with theatre, opera, concerts and comedy shows throughout the season. Across Sydney and its suburbs are a number of other venues where you can find performances on every night of the week.

Sydney's world-class performances

Sydney is a lively city that’s bustling with theatre, shows and performances to cater to everyone.

Located in Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House hosts shows performed by some of the biggest names in music, theatre and comedy. Highlights of this season include Puccini’s moving opera, Madama Butterfly; a musical theatre rendition of Pinocchio; and Strictly Luhrmann: Music from the Movies, a visually spectacular concert of the music from Bazz Luhrmann’s epic films including Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge. Regular tours of the Sydney Opera House are also available.

Walsh Bay is home to a number of arts venues including the Wharf Theatre and Sydney Dance Company. The Sydney Theatre is also located here. Guided by artistic directors Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton, the company puts on an annual 12-play program consisting of bold new Australian plays and interpretations of its classic repertoire.

The Capitol Theatre in Haymarket hosts big name productions including Disney’s The Lion King, on stage between now and the end of August.

The Griffin Theatre Company has its residency at the historic SBW Stables in Kings Cross and is an engine-room for theatrical discovery and diversity, while Slide Lounge in nearby Darlinghurst offers weekly cabaret shows.

Cosmopolitan Newtown also has a thriving theatre scene with the Seymour Centre and the Enmore Theatre, where music and comedy are the staple forms of entertainment.

Also check out Ritz Theatre in Randwick, Belvoir St Theatre in Surry Hills or The Riverside, out from the city in the Western Sydney suburb of Parramatta.

Sydney Comedy Festival

The 10th annual Sydney Comedy Festival event takes place from 22 April to 17 May. Hundreds of the world's funniest comedians take to stages across Sydney to entertain an audience of more than 100,000 people.
