North Head Sanctuary - Manly
North Head is one of Sydney’s most spectacular landmarks, an area of pristine bushland dotted with institutional uses such as the former School of Artillery.
Visit the Gatehouse Visitor Centre at the entrance to the former School of Artillery and learn about the natural and cultural history of the peninsula and its surrounds. There is a Discovery Room for children to enjoy crafts and reading.
Pick up a visitor’s guide and take a self-guided tour of the site. The Gunners’ Walk is an opportunity to see the flora and fauna of North Head – Banksias, grass trees and flannel flowers; New Holland Honeyeaters, Little Wattlebirds and seabirds. Keep an eye out for the Eastern Water Dragon (lizard). The walking track has wonderful views of the harbour, the ocean and city skyline. This is a place where you forget there is a city of four million just across the way.
Discover the military history of North Head. Art deco military buildings surround an impressive parade ground.
Guided tours run on the second Sunday of the month and include underground tunnels. Bookings recommended.
Opening times
Gatehouse Visitor Centre open from 10am to 4pm. Gatehouse Visitor Centre closed Good Friday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day
