Harbourside Pyrmont, just minutes from the city centre, has become a magnet for gourmands who know when they’re onto a good thing.

The area’s famous calling card is the busy Sydney Fish Markets. The 7am-fish auctions are good fun or lunch with a glass of bubbly and a plate of fresh prawns on the picnic tables outside. Another major food drawcard is the Saturday Growers' Market at Pyrmont Bay Park, where you can buy fresh, organic local produce with an emphasis on ‘food miles’.

If pubs are your thing, try Harris Street’s Harlequin, The Quarryman or The Kirk which has great pub grub. More of a date night? Gallon’s brooding, darkened interior is good for snuggling and sipping a glass of decent vino, or try tapas-wine bar Bartino on Union Street.

For fine dining, The Star has you covered with classy Sokyo, which presents Japanese food with a twist (the sashimi is out of this world). Other musts include Momofuko and Black; the latter has fabulous city views and a whopping great wine cellar of 770 drops from around the world. If you get peckish rolling the dice in the casino, pork and prawn dumplings or a rich laksa at Fat Noodle will easily fill the gap.

Don’t forget to explore Pyrmont’s wharves, too. Jones Bay Wharf is home to cool, intimate tapas-wine bar Alira, and quiet, exclusive bar-restaurant, Flying Fish. On Sydney Wharf, you’ll find Ripples, a breezy mod-oz-mediterranean-style eatery where it’s all too easy to soak up the views and linger over a mushroom and herb risotto or lemon curd tart. The annual Pyrmont Festival of Wine, Food and Art held in May is a great way to enjoy the local flavour.
