The Intimate Cinema of John Conomos
Overview
The Intimate Cinema of John Conomos brings together friends, artists, writers and colleagues to celebrate the life, work and enduring influence of John Conomos (1947–2024) – artist, critic, writer, educator and a defining voice in Australian moving-image culture.
Across more than four decades, Conomos worked between cinema, video, performance, literature and critical theory, resisting fixed categories in favour of a personal and cross-disciplinary approach to the moving image. Deeply autobiographical, his video essays move between memory and history, tracing migration, diaspora and cultural identity through the places, people and images that shaped his life.
The evening presents four videos spanning Conomos' practice – Autumn Song (1998), Lake George (After Mark Rothko) (2007), The Girl from the Sea (2014) and Miro on the Beach (2014) – each work will be introduced by a friend and colleague.
The screenings will be followed by a conversation about Conomos' work, lead by Dr Ann Finegan and curator and former Executive Director of Artspace, Nick Tsoutas, with audience reflections.
Refreshments will be served from 5.30pm.
