Former site of the Sydney Free Public Library
Overview
The former site of the Sydney Free Public Library is located on the corner of Bent Street, Sydney. The NSW Government purchased the collection of the Australian Subscription Library (established in 1826) in 1869 and abolished the subscription fee, creating the first publicly accessible library in New South Wales. This collection is now the foundation of the State Library of NSW, located on the corner of Shakespeare Place and Macquarie Street.
