Matthew Flinders statue
Overview
Matthew Flinders was a naval navigator, chart maker and explorer who was the first European to circumnavigate the Australian Continent (New Holland) in the ship 'Investigator', in 1802. His colleague, Bungaree, is often overlooked in the retelling of this story. Bungaree, who was born around 1775 and died in 1830, is notable as the first Aboriginal Australian to circumnavigate the continent with Flinders during their voyages of 1802 to 1803.
