Episode 3: Sydney City
Hayden gets an architectural tour of the Sydney Harbour foreshore and explores the city’s small bar district.
Hayden wakes up to Sydney Harbour Bridge views from his waterfront hotel room at Pier One Sydney Harbour: “Not a bad place to start the day!”
Planning to explore his own backyard, Hayden books a staycation at Pier One Sydney Harbour. Located on the water beneath the southern pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this boutique hotel features 189 designer room, many with unique views of the harbour.
“We have a young city inscribed by 10,000-year-old patterns... it reveals so much,” says Eoghan Lewis, founder of Sydney Architecture Walks.
Hayden heads for a walk around Circular Quay with Sydney Architecture Walks founder, Eoghan Lewis. Run by architects, the tours aim to decode the city’s most provocative and inspiring projects as well as offering a new perspective on Sydney’s famous buildings.
“We've been trying to hide ourselves for the last eight years, sometimes it’s worked a little bit too well,” says Mikey Enright, a bar owner in the heart of the YCK Laneways small bar district.
Hayden checks out the YCK Laneways, a new precinct bringing together the CBD’s best small bars clustered around York, Clarence and Kent Streets. Many of the bars embrace the original architecture of their laneway, carriageway and storehouse locations.
“We’re at the back of a little barbershop here. Coming in via the alley, it's a fun experience,” says Hayden as he meets owner Mikey Enright at his hidden small bar, The Barber Shop.
Barbershop by day, cocktail bar by night, Hayden stops by The Barber Shop, hidden within the YCK Laneways. Owner and bartender Mikey Enright pours Hayden one of his signature Barbershop Gimlets, using Australian dry gin and native ingredients.
