North Sydney and Chatswood

Discover the charms of North Sydney and Chatswood, from fun rides at Luna Park to sailing on Sydney Harbour, waterside dining, great theatre, enticing shopping and more. You can walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to Milsons Point for Luna Park and to Kirribilli for the Ensemble Theatre.

There are frequent trains, too. The trip from the city centre is minutes to Milsons Point and North Sydney stations and only 20 minutes to Chatswood, where you can see world-class shows in the Concourse cultural centre as well as browse stylish boutiques and glamorous department stores.

You’ll have lots of fun at Luna Park, an amusement park with a Ferris wheel on the edge of one of the world’s great natural harbours. A scenic way to travel to Luna Park is by ferry from Circular Quay across the sparkling harbour and then a short foreshore walk to the entrance – a giant smiling moon.

At night the Ferris wheel’s pretty lights glitter on the water. Nearby you can enjoy a night of laughs at the Sydney Comedy Club and waterside restaurants such as The Deck, Ripples and Aqua Dining, which sits above North Sydney Olympic Pool - 86 world swimming records were set in the pool.

Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden, Lavender Bay

On a delightful walk from Luna Park around Lavender Bay is artist Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden, a tranquil public garden and lovely picnic spot. You’ll find more charming parks along the bay with great views and the Sails on Lavender Bay, a restaurant near the ferry wharf at McMahons Point.

Kirribilli is a stroll east from Luna Park and home to Kirribilli House, the prime minister’s official Sydney residence. The bustling Kirribilli Markets is held twice a month. There are many delicious places to eat in Sydney’s lower north shore, including the ‘eat streets’ of Crows Nest and Chatswood.

For fresh produce and gourmet treats, Northside Produce Market is every first and third Saturday of the month in Civic Park, North Sydney. A short walk away is Mary MacKillop Place, where Australia’s first Catholic saint is buried. In this serene location, explore her extraordinary life in the museum.
