Curator talk – Mahn
Monday 08 July 2019 (DAILY event)
Learn about Mahn, a new gallery installation dedicated to Sydney’s first fisherwomen.
Join First Nations Curator, Wailwan and Kooma woman Laura McBride and First Nations archaeologist, Bundjalung woman Courtney Marsh as they provide insight into the creation of the First Australians Galleries new installation, Mahn (fisherwoman).
Mahnjalung (fisherwomen) fished Sydney’s harbours and waterways for a very long time, sustaining both the people and sea in harmony. The curators will provide insight into the relationship between Sydney’s clans and their Country, and how they developed the installation in partnership with local First Nations communities in order for them to represent themselves and their histories at the Museum. Mahn features a new sculptural piece and film acquisition created to honour and remember mahnjalung and their ongoing legacy, as well as more than 1,000 archaeological objects collected from Sydney’s most iconic areas.
