Newtown

Discover colourful and unconventional Newtown, a vibrant inner Sydney neighbourhood with a thriving music, theatre, design and restaurant scene. King Street is a delicious ‘eat street’ and cool shopping strip, with a marvellous range of designer boutiques, vintage stores and specialty shops.

Only 10 minutes from the city centre by train, Newtown borders the University of Sydney and is home to rows of restored 19th century terrace houses. Restaurants and cafes are dotted along King Street, Enmore Road, Australia Street and in neighbouring Erskineville, Enmore and Stanmore.

Oscillate WildlyContinental Deli Bar Bistro, and Hartsyard are in Newtown and feature in The Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide. Stanbuli in Enmore and Sixpenny in Stanmore feature, too. As for classic colonial pubs, the Court House Hotel in Australia Street has a lovely beer garden.

The hip vibe of Newtown pulsates in its small bars, cool cafes and craft breweries. Taste exquisite cocktails at Corridor, find the hidden gem Brewtown Newtown and its steampunk coffee machine, and savour seasonal ales at Young Henrys Brewery, a microbrewery with an inviting tasting room.

Stroll along King Street for more attractions, from the cavernous Gould’s Book Arcade to designer fashion. The southern end is nicknamed SoKi, short for south King Street. Leo Monk Handbags and All Buttons Great and Small are SoKi institutions. Enmore Road is a popular shopping strip, too.

The beating cultural heart is the Enmore Theatre, where some of the best musicians and comedians perform. Check out The Vanguard for chilled-out jazz and performance art and the King Street Theatre for the avant-garde performances. Newtown’s calendar entices with exciting events.
