Fast facts

  • Historic agricultural town close to magnificent beaches
  • Set on a ridge between green valleys and the Great Dividing Range
  • 220 km south of Sydney, population 2,500

Why go there

This National Trust town has blossomed over the past few years. Bookshops, cafés and galleries have taken over most of the main street, making Milton a pocket-sized delight.

Set in lush farmland, Milton is starting to meld with the neighbouring coastal towns of Mollymook and Ulladulla.

To the west, the landscape is dominated by the rock spire of Pigeon House Mountain, one of the most striking features of Morton National Park. The ascent to the top of the mountain involves a final demanding climb up ladders, but the reward is the sublime view.

History

Reverend Thomas Kendall received the first land grant in the area in 1828. His grandson, the poet Henry Kendall, was born on the family property in 1839.

The town developed as the service centre for the local agricultural community. Several of its churches date from the 1860s and '70s, and the town is classified by the National Trust.
