Fast facts

  • Tranquil town well equipped for ‘surf and sand’ holidays
  • Beachside town lying between headlands and backed by forest
  • 297 km south of Sydney, population 2,000

Why go there

Broulee is dedicated to the sea. The fishing is great, there’s good diving and snorkelling in the area and the surfing is some of the best on the South Coast. The beaches are particularly lovely in this part of the world. Broulee Beach is well protected and the sand dips gradually, which makes it a family favourite. To the north, there are several small and secluded coves with fine beaches.

History

Surveyed and gazetted in 1837, Broulee developed relatively early as a port for whaling ships and coastal sailing vessels. In 1841, the schooner "Rover" foundered here during a fierce storm but several crew were saved by local Aboriginals who formed a human chain and plucked them from the surf. The town’s great beaches have made it a popular holiday destination, especially with Canberra residents.

Things to

  • Explore Broulee Island, a nature reserve at the south end of the beach with outstanding views along the coast.
  • Dive at Black Rock off Batehaven where the formations include the Arch and the Bubble Cave.
  • Surf at Pink Rocks on the northern side of Broulee Island.

Don’t miss

  • A surfing lesson at the Broulee Surf School.
  • The rock pools and shale formations of Guerilla Bay.
  • The dazzling coastal views from Burrewarra Point Lighthouse.
  • Fishing for whiting off the rocks.
  • Sunrise walks along the beach.
