Shopping and Markets in Sydney
Dive into Sydney's fantastic shopping scene and you'll find designer fashions, world-class malls, bustling markets, boutique stores and shopping tours that cover the lot.
In the CBD, the Pitt Street Mall is where it's at: this pedestrian-only shopping strip sees a passing foot trade of over one million shoppers per week. Label hounds can zip through the chain and department stores flanking the strip, but make time to explore the string of subterranean shopping tunnels linking Pitt Street to the Queen Victoria Building and the Galeries Victoria, both fantastic retail havens in their own right.
Good shopping continues on the city's fringes. Double Bay, Paddington, and Bondi Junction's vast Westfield mall stock enough designer labels to keep any shopper happy, while Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Potts Point are worth a browse for hip fashions and unique homewares. In the inner west, Newtown and Balmain are famous for funky fashions, specialty stores and gift emporiums.
On weekends, it's all about the Sydney markets, and the best Saturday markets are in Glebe, Balmain, Rozelle and Paddington. Browse the fashions and second-hand clothes, check out handmade prints, jewellery and leather goods or seek out through stalls groaning with second-hand books. Other must-see markets include The Rocks Market, open all weekend and on Sundays, along with Bondi Markets by the sea.
Short on time? A tour could also be a hassle-free way to get your shopping fix, as well as a fun day out with friends. You'll find tours around the CBD and in Manly, or design your own personalised shopping day out, complete with guide.
