Summer's a great time of the year to enjoy a holiday in Sydney. There are plenty of exciting events, outdoor cinemas, championship sports and warm evenings to enjoy wandering by Sydney Harbour.
Annual events that are popular with families include Carols in the Domain just before Christmas, New Year's Eve fireworks at Darling Harbour, the Ferrython on the harbour during Australia Day festivities and the excitement of dragon dancers during Chinatown's annual Chinese New Year parade.
Plan ahead and book to see a show at the Sydney Opera House, experience a ghost tour of The Rocks, or a check out a special exhibition at a major museum. Meet native Australian animals at zoos, parks and aquariums across Sydney including Taronga Zoo, Featherdale Wildlife Park and Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary.
Sydney beaches have all the essential ingredients for a fun day out over summer including great waves and rock pools, alfresco cafes and plenty of shady picnic spots. Don't miss visiting two of the world's most famous beaches, Bondi and Manly, or find your own patch of sandy paradise from Tamarama to Coogee, Dee Why to Palm Beach. The inner harbour also has some quiet beaches which are family-friendly. Sirius Cove in Mosman, Balmoral Beach, Watsons Bay and Nielsen Park near Vaucluse all have netted ocean baths and shady picnic spots.
If your family prefers to swim in calmer waters, you'll find many Sydney beaches with saltwater pools. Sydney has beachside pools, harourside pools and Olympic pools, all in great locations. Some of the best outdoor ocean pools can be found at Bronte Beach, Queenscliff and Harbord north of Manly.
