Things to do by the beach
Highlights
Summer beach action
Sydney comes alive in summer with plenty of outdoor fun by the beach to keep everyone happy during the holidays. A typical day at the beach in Sydney involves swimming, surfing, walking, eating fish and chips or sushi on the sand. Don't forget to swim between the yellow and red flags which indicate where surf lifesavers patrol.
Things to do in Sydney’s summer

Sydney is the perfect Summer holiday destination, and with so many activities to enjoy you can make the most of the beach lifestyle while also learning some new skills.
The latest fitness craze is paddle boarding around Sydney Harbour, and Summer is the perfect time to strengthen those core muscles while you explore beautiful secret inlets and bays. You can hire a paddleboard from Manly Surf School Hire.
While you’re in Manly, why not head over to the surf side for some beach volleyball action? Kids of all ages will love Manly Waterworks, and, if the waterslide action all gets too much, you can pop next door to visit Manly SEA LIFE Sanctuary.
You might be surprised at how much marine life there is in Sydney. Explore this magical underwater world with a snorkel and flippers, or book some scuba diving lessons. Shelly Beach and Clovelly are good spots for spotting the local marine life.
Another peaceful way to explore the water is on a kayak, where you can join a guided tour around Sydney Harbour and Middle Head, or simply paddle at your own pace.
Get fit outdoors

Don’t spend Summer in the gym - it’s the perfect time of the year in Sydney to get outdoors with a new fitness activity. Kayakercise teaches you paddling techniques but also includes core, cardio and strength-building beach training. Enjoy a gentler pace with sun salutations by the sea at a beachside yoga classes, or focus on your ocean swimming stamina and take part in one of Sydney’s great ocean swim competitions.
Dive or snorkel in Gordon’s Bay
Explore a magical marine world at this popular diving spot between Coogee and Clovelly Beaches. A dive trail, made of chains and buoys, helps you find your way around easily.

Things to do at Chowder Bay
Secluded Chowder Bay, together with Middle Head and Georges Heights, form the stunning Headland Park near Mosman and Balmoral. There are plenty of things to do here but swimming or paddling within the bay’s calm waters or learning to snorkel or dive are top of the must-do list.
