Shopping hours and tips

Popular shopping precincts in Sydney are open seven days a week, from 9am to 5.30pm except on Thursdays when many shops are open until about 9pm. Some specialty shops in major shopping centres open later in the morning but will stay open until 6pm or 7pm Monday to Friday, with 9am-5pm trading on weekends. Supermarkets in these centres may open for 24 hours or from very early in the morning until very late at night.

In Sydney suburbs, it’s not unusual for shops to open later in the morning and close on a Monday if they open all weekend. It’s also not unusual for suburban shops to be closed on a Sunday.

The city centre around Pitt Street Mall, the Queen Victoria Building and the arcades that run off it make up Sydney’s city shopping hub. Don’t miss glamorous department stores, Myer and David Jones, as well as the historic Strand Arcade, Sydney Central Plaza and Westfield Sydney.

Nearby shopping neighbourhoods include Paddington, Bondi Junction, Newtown, Balmain and Mosman. Pick up factory seconds and samples at Market City in Chinatown, DFO Homebush and Birkenhead Point at Drummoyne.

While in Sydney, make sure you check out local brand names including Sass & Bide jeans, Zimmerman swimwear,  Camilla Franks’ kaftans, ugg boots, Dinosaur Designs resin jewellery and a piece of beautiful Aboriginal art.
